Cowfish

January 1, 2024

“An example of how contemporary architecture can create an iconic landmark and social destination is the open-air pavilion of Cowfish Restaurant, located in Hampton Bays.

The owners of Cowfish restaurant required a major renovation and redesign of the main building which was in a state of disrepair and had been leaking heavily.

In addition, they desired to develop an open-air architectural space that would serve as a bar during the summer months, so customers could take advantage of the scenic waterfront views.

Surrounded by water on 3 sides of the Shinnecock Canal, Pamela Glazer’s architecture for the pavilion reflects the design of the boats docked nearby.

Architect: Pamela Glazer

Size: Main Restaurant – 300 seats, Pavilion Bar – 30 seats

Location: Hampton Bays, NY

Polygal translucent roof

In order to make the building hurricane-proof, it needed innovative materials that could withstand winds of up to 130 mph without walls.

Due to the integrity of the design and the materials used, both Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Ida were no match for the structure and it remained intact.

While the entire bar is open during operation, it can be locked and watertight after hours and during the off season. All the ceiling and side panels are translucent, allowing this nightspot to shine like a beacon after dark.

There is no doubt that The Cowfish has become one of the most popular bars and restaurants in the Hamptons, with its great drinks, food, and exceptional views provided within a striking architectural setting.”

Windmühle Bradford, Ottmarsbocholt, Germany

Owners: Jeannette und Alfred Bradford

Architect: Klaus Tombrock

Location: Ottmarsbocholt, Germany

Living in a monument: the windmill at Ottmarsbocholt was still used for grinding corn until the 1970s. Today, the listed building is home to Jeannette and Alfred Bradford. A place with its own special charm: the 200 square metres extend over four floors, and the walls are round — with no corners or edges at all. A plain table, leather sofa and metal shelves now stand under the wooden ceiling with solid beams where horse-drawn carriages used to be loaded with sacks of flour. Purism in the bathroom is provided by the washbasin and bath from our design line ART. A statement to timeless functionalism.

A Kitchen in the Kenilworth

January 1, 2024

Design: The Un-Gyve Limited Group

Architecture: Patti Seidman

Project Management: Domus Design + Development

Location: New York City

Size: 400 square feet (37.1 square meters)

The Kenilworth, by architect Ralph Townsend, Steinle and Haskell, a Beaux-Arts building built in 1908, at 151 Central Park West, an example of  Second Empire architecture, is described by Elliot Willensky and Norval White in The A.I.A. Guide to New York City, Third Edition (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988) as a "cubical, russet-brick wedding cake topped by a grand convex mansard roof" with its stone embellishments  "The whipped-cream efforts are executed in limestone in the interests of posterity."

The owner of the apartment made the protracted decision (decision-making not her strong point;  by protracted we mean many many years) to part with an older feature of the place, the small maid's room in the far corner of the kitchen, which, once removed, allows for a wall of pantry, a long table and vintage chandelier above it, and plenty of natural light to make the most of the Gustavian grey and white palette—painted limewood cupboards with natural interiors, enamelled lavastone countertops, basins and tiles, and hand selected split-joint mosaic for the floor and shower base of the adjoining guest bath which made for the easier structural decision to convert the linen closet from the back hall for dual entry.

The simple elegance of the space is equalled by practical traditional solid wood details, dovetail drawers and birds-beak brackets for adjustable shelving, custom accents from cutting boards that nest into the lava farmer's sink and slide aside for access to the bowl to all wood lazy-Susans, utensil trays, and pantry bins.

On The Mark

January 1, 2024

Design: Jacques Grange

Location: New York City

Photographs: The Mark Hotel

Legendary designer Jacques Grange revamped the interiors of the Mark Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in 2009, and in 2015 finished putting his spin on the 12,000-square-foot penthouse suite—the largest in the U.S. The bi-level suite contains five bedrooms, six baths, two powder rooms, a conservatory, a library lounge, a dining room, and a rooftop terrace. There’s also a chef’s kitchen and living area which can be transformed into a full-size ballroom.

Mr. Grange designed most of the furnishings specifically for The Mark. “The penthouse is in total synergy with the hotel’s aesthetic on an even grander, majestic scale,” he told AD. “While the space is the ultimate in high-end luxury, it was important for it to feel like a home away from home.”

The Mark turned to BIS BIS and The Un-Gyve Limited Group to produce bespoke furnishings and realize the designer’s vision with precision and refinement.

19th-Century Provençal-style Côte d'Azur Villa, Cannes

January 1, 2024

Design: Elliott Barnes

Firm: Elliott Barnes Interiors (EBI)

Photography: Francis Amiand c/o EBI

A three-story seaside villa on the Côte d'Azur Villa in Cannes conceived anew with respect for its Provençal spirit and authenticity of the 19th century abode, a vacation home to a European family for more than 25 years before it was entrusted to Elliott Barnes the celebrated American designer — an American in Paris since 1987 when he was called in to collaborate with Andrée Putman, completing his architectural degree only two years prior, staying on sixteen years in her studio and staying in France to establish his own firm. Ivory clad LUX OVAL COUTURE an apt selection, as a free-standing focal point of relaxed elegance in the subdued sand shades of the interior and as situated near the sea on the French Riviera.
